ALSA is an alternative sound system for Linux - it stands for "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture" and is intended as a replacement for the standard sound drivers.

ALSA is still in heavy development but is already quite usable.

ALSA isn't widely used at the moment, but should become more popular in the near future - especially when configuration is done automatically at installation time.
